Ishmael got me thinking about my choice to become a doctor. I have always wanted to do it not because of the money but because I truly have a desire to help people. Sometimes I have doubts though because the process involves many many many years of schooling. I hope that I will not skew from my ultimate goal of having my own practice and maybe opening up a nonprofit. If nothing else I would love to volunteer with Doctor´s Without Borders. I have talked to many surgeons who wanted to initially do the same thing I want to, help people, but the cost of medical school is so expensive that make it hard not to specialize in an area that makes more money.
Yesterday I was reading a blog by Patch Adams, a doctor who has been an inspiration to me. He is known for being a clown because his care involves loving people and making them laugh, not just treating them like another disease to be cured. If you haven´t seen the movie Patch Adams I highly recommend renting it, even if you´re not into medicine it´s still a very inspiring story.
Here is one of his blogs that I though pertained a lot to Ishmael, even though he gives some personal statements about politics as well.

  1. Your post got me thinking about what kind of person I want to be. At UAA, My major is economics, and my minors are accounting and mathematics. The reason why I chose these major and minors is my interest in financial industry. To be honest with you, I wanted to earn lots of money. (Also, economics itself is really fun!) However, after taking this class, I became uncertain about my future goal. I started to think just working in financial industry for money won’t help anything. Well, I haven’t figured it out yet. Maybe I should work in public finance sector or for an international organization such as UNDP. I’m really not sure, but I’m glad I can get to think about this matter when I’m still in the university. Otherwise, I would have been just a no-brainer.

  2. I am glad that you have decided to re-think your goal after college. Making money is great and extremely relevant in our culture but it doesn´t always make you happy just to have money. This class has reenforced my goal to help people with my education. I think/hope you will find something that allow you to do the same. It´s great that you figured it out in college, most people are not so lucky and once they have a job they are stuck there.
